President U Thein Sein attends the meeting to clarify country-wide census-taking (2014) process

Country-wide census taking (2014) process was clarified at the meeting hall of the Union Government Office in the Presidential Palace here this afternoon.

It was attended by President U Thein Sein, Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, and Chairmen of the Union Election Commission U Tin Aye, the Union Ministers, Pyithu Hluttaw and Amyotha Hluttaw Committee Chairmen U Htay Oo, U Thein Zaw, U Zaw Myint Pe, the Union Attorney-General and officials.

Union Minister for Immigration and Population U Khin Yi said that Myanmar started census taking process as of 1891. Till 1941, it was carried out 10 years per time. Nation-wide census taking processes were taking place in 1973 and 1983. According to the census, Myanmar had a population of 28.92 million in 1973 and 35.30 million in 1983, he added. Those present gave suggestions.

President U Thein Sein said that it needs to have exact data for country’s development. The country could not take census for 30 years since 1983 resulting in lack of exact facts and figures. Country’s development projects did not achieve successes as targeted as there were big variances in facts and figures. Census taking process is essential for getting exact figures.

He touched upon Government’s efforts and preparations for nation-wide census taking, technical and cash assistance from UN and international organizations. He pointed out that census taking process calls for ensuring peace and stability throughout the country. The peace talks with all armed national races groups are being held for reaching nationwide ceasefire.

Census-taking process needs to be regarded as a national duty. He called for all participations in the process under the leadership of the government and Tatmadaw.

The 12-day census taking process will be carried from 30 March to 10 April in 2014 with expected costs of 58.5 million USD. The State will contribute US dollars 15 million and UN, five millions US dollars for materials and course.

Donation of 2.8 million US dollars by Aus AID and 16 million US dollars by the British Government have been received. Coordination is being made for receiving donations from Norway and Switzerland.

Experts from 11 countries and UN Statistics Division, UNFPA, ESCAP and the World Bank will help Myanmar’s census taking process.
